Buying your first camcorder could be just daunting and challenging itself. There are hundreds of brands and models out there making it more confusing on what camcorder you really "need". Just because you are searching for a low cost camcorder, doesn't mean that you found the best deal. Here are camcorder buying tips to help you find the best possible camcorder and get a great deal at the same time.
1. If you don't use your camcorder what good does it make - How many folks spent high dollars after getting hyped after seeing what this camcorder can do for them. Just like any other item or gizmos you bought before, don't just get your video camera stuck in the closet, use them. You may catch some of those unexpected moments in your own camcorder. You post it in your site and who knows that you could be the next YouTube celebrity.
2. Camcorders are not created equal - With the huge varieties of styles and brands of camcorders that are available out there, most of them will probably suit your need. But of course your budget and your primary use of the camcorder will dictate most of your buying decision. Don't just buy any old or cheap camcorder, research and understand the models. Do your homework.
3. Be wary of real cheap deals, if it's too good to be true, it probably is - always bear in mind that retailers always intend to make a profit on whatever they sell, including camcorders. If you find a price that is drastically lower than most of the competition, it is possible that unit could be going out of production, refurbished / reconditioned item or even some accessories are missing. Make sure you compare apples to apples.
4. Consider getting a warranty, case and tripod - Everyone hates being pitched by the salesperson when it comes to offer of the warranty. But getting a warranty avoids most of the hassles when the gadget you bought just broke. A case for your camcorder is important because it will provide protection for your camera both from environmental and physical damage. And you will only realize how important having a tripod when you and the rest of your viewer complained after watching a shaky video.
5. Pay attention to minimum light performance because it matters a lot - Human perception of low lighting is completely different from video camera's interpretation. A typical scenario is shooting an indoor event which is acceptable lighting standard for the human eyes. But how many times you watched home made videos indoor where the video capture is just terribly dark. Make sure you consider low light features when you make your buying decision.
6. Don't get misled with the megapixels hoopla - You will notice when you even do your window shopping for camcorders that it's all about megapixels here there and everywhere. Megapixel is basically just the size of the window of your video when you watch but the quality is completely a different feature. The higher the megapixel the bigger the size of the video. If you want video quality,
look for "CCD" which simply all about the size of the chip inside the video camera. If you could find a camera with a higher CCD (3 is the highest so far), that's what gives you the best video quality.
7. Don't combine camera and video camera (hybrid camera) into one - Convenience is your only advantage of having your static camera and video camera into one unit. Yes, there are some pricey hybrid video camera out there that delivers good quality picture and video qualities, but get ready digging deeper into your pocket. You are better off getting a separate video and picture camera in saving money without sacrificing better quality.
8. Know where and when you are going to use your video camera - It would be better if you could write down all the possibilities of when and where you are going to do your video shots. This will help you decide the best feature of the camcorder you need if you need to pay more attention to size, low light feature, ruggedness…etc.
9. Ignore the digital zoom gimmick and other worthless feature - You have to realize that whatever you see or read in most of these video camera feature advertisement are designed to mostly inflate them. A good example is the built-in camera light where a penlight ray is probably better. This light is almost negligible in improving your video quality. Another over inflated number for video camera just like the megapixel is the digital zoom which get advertise in the 100's like 700x digital zooms. The problem with digital zoom is it distorts the picture. And you better have a tripod because the more you zoom, a tiny movement on your camera will magnify to a shaky video.
10. Test drive it - you probably have made a decision on a particular camcorder by doing your research on line. But you're probably still wondering on how comfortable it would feel on your hand and stable it would hold when you do your own video capture session. Even if you're planning to buy online, try to into a store and test and play the models you like to buy. Just like buying a care - Test Drive It!
